“Peer, Employee, or System? A Community of Practice for Peer Supervisors” with Tanya Kraege

Thursday, September 17, 2026 from 1:30 – 3:00 pm CT

Facilitator:
  • Tanya Kraege is the Director of Peer Services at Safe Communities in Madison, Wisconsin, where she leads peer support programs serving communities across Dane, Rock, and Jefferson Counties. With 17 years of experience in mental health and substance use services, Tanya has dedicated her career to working alongside people navigating substance use, mental health experiences, trauma, incarceration and reentry, relationships, and pregnancy and parenting while using substances.

In her leadership role, Tanya oversees Recovery Coaches and Certified Peer Specialists working in a variety of community, healthcare, criminal justice, and other settings. Her work centers on developing and strengthening peer-led programs that honor lived experience, reduce stigma, promote harm reduction, and create meaningful pathways to recovery and wellness for individuals and their loved ones.

Tanya also works nationally as a consultant, trainer, and advocate focused on anti-stigma efforts, peer support program development, and strengthening the integration of peer providers across systems of care.

Tanya is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor, Recovery Coach, Recovery Coach Trainer, and Wisconsin Certified Peer Specialist. Her professional expertise is deeply informed by her own lived experience of addiction and recovery. She uses her story alongside her clinical, leadership, and peer support experience to challenge stigma, create systems change, and help others find hope, connection, and new possibilities for their lives.

Above all, Tanya believes in the power of relationships, community, and lived experience and that people deserve to be met with dignity, curiosity, and hope wherever they are in their journey.

Description:
  • This interactive Community of Practice brings peer support supervisors together to explore the real-world challenges of supervising peer professionals. Using the question “Is this a peer issue, an employee issue, or a systems issue?” as a guiding framework, participants will examine topics such as role drift and scope creep, burnout and grief, supporting staff through challenges in their own wellness or recovery, and balancing accountability with peer values. Through shared scenarios, reflection, and peer consultation, supervisors will strengthen their ability to identify where challenges truly live, and where the intervention belongs.
